I once had a chance, as part of my studies, to improve Diia. We interviewed the Diia team and asked all sorts of questions before starting. From the interview we realised that voting for Eurovision is the service with the highest user engagement. That is, this very function (voting for the Eurovision candidate) is the one our users use most often 🫠 That's when I understood my misanthropy wasn't enough.

The release of this song and people's inadequate reaction to the singer's view prove once again how far Ukrainian "celebrities" are from the real problems of the Ukrainian people.
No one has posted about this song specifically on the sub yet, which is really surprising to me given the general amount of hype Vidbir usually gets and how strong the song is. It’s the only song so far this season that has given me “winner vibes.” […] What do you all think about LELÉKA’s chances?

Is there a lot of hype for this one in Ukraine? I suppose I could see it lending itself to a pretty stunning live performance. Intellectually, I understand why this is a beautiful song, but it's still a bit boring to me.

I see it as a fan favourite among Ukrainians. Almost in every video-reaction it's a winner, this is the winner of the closed auditions for eurofans. But of course, fanbases of other artists will also vote in Vidbir itself (so it would be difficult for Leleka, who is almost noname, to win)

People cry and have goosebumps from it. I'd say the emotional response is bigger than for any other Vidbir song this year.

A dark horse of Vidbir and a stunning discovery for many Ukrainians (both the song and the artist). The lyrics and the message of the song literally hit the nerve -- people hear a much needed hope and light in it, something everyone here desperately needs right now. I'd say Ridnym is this year's My Sea -- a song that connects strongly with the emotional background of the audience and therefore has a fair chance for success.

Ukrainians love the song a lot bc of the message. She's singing about her native home, about building the new hope for Ukraine. It resonates to Ukrainians a lot more than the messages of Jerry's song. Regardless, it's a battle between them two (Monokate is not doing any hype to her song right now). I see both doing incredibly well this year. And Leleka gives a wonderful live performance so I'm not worried about her chances.

This is an international subreddit, and internationally, as I've noticed, Leleka is hardly considered the winner of the Vidbir. But if we're talking about Ukraine (and I'm Ukrainian), it seems to me that she's the main contender for victory. The way I see it (and this is a subjective perception and my bubble), it will be a fight between Jerry and Leleka for first place. Monokate, as far as I can see, doesn't live up to this duel. But we'll see what the live performances will be like.

It was the same last year and the year before. Even before the full-scale invasion people found something to rage at, it's just sharper now, and Eurovision and its contestants are now the easiest target for hate and for speculation on sensitive, painful topics. The national selection is once a year, but you can trash a corrupt official every day — people have "got used" to that, it's the baseline
Why the hell is his backside burning like that? Why on earth did he tie Leleka and Eurovision to the energy situation?

Then I propose we all just sit and be sad that the energy system is screwed. These idiots are so annoying — why not ban smiling too, since the country is at war?
Personally I don't like our tendency to hang labels on people. If he's wrong, argue your answer to him and then post the screenshots. Just posting a screenshot saying "ha-ha idiot" is a bit cringe. For example, one could have replied that winning Eurovision draws attention to Ukraine, including that same energy crisis.
What Euro-VISION if there's no power? Honestly I don't get what's wrong with the post, maybe it's a bit emotional. I think it would be good for our performer to go on stage, switch off all the lights completely and stay silent for 4 minutes, to draw Europeans' attention once more.

It is a beautiful, meaningful message on that helmet. On the bright side: had the IOC allowed that helmet, it would have gotten a little attention and maybe a few stories. But by banning it, there have been tons of stories and photos of the helmet have been all over social media. Streisand Effect wins again. Glory to Ukraine’s heroes.

It was a smart move by Vladyslav. He was not a serious contender and was not likely to come anywhere close to a medal anyway. By doing this he can get some political attention and have a reason to justify why he didn't win anything again.

As a German, I say that this is an utter disgrace! I see no offensive political message that could justify this decision! It's a commemoration to killed friends who would've competed in Cortina as well - nothing else! This is not only an insult to Vladyslav but to every person on his helmet. Meanwhile the murderers and their henchmen are allowed to compete again. Disgusting decisions!

What is said in this post is the author's personal opinion and in no way reflects the position of my employer, Revolut. […] Monobank's head Horokhovskyi published on Threads a photo of a girl (now deleted) from the KYC process, with a flag resembling the Russian flag in the background. […] It doesn't matter at all whether it really is the flag of Slovakia 🇸🇰 or whether the girl is telling the truth. […] Monobank disclosed a client's personal data in pursuit of hype and took her for a ride on the jackal express across the Ukrainian internet.
Note: The starter writes "Slovakia"; the client herself said it was the Slovenian flag.
I can just see the committee in Brussels on European integration sitting there, looking at the GDPR requirements, looking at what the head of Monobank pulled, and adding another 10 years of reforms to Ukraine's EU accession. And the funniest part — that's how it will be. A spectacularly stupid case.

But you won't get service either — you'll simply be ignored.
Note: Reply to the previous comment.
That some organisation calls itself a bank doesn't mean it is a banking institution. What makes an institution a bank in Ukraine is a banking licence issued by the National Bank of Ukraine. In all these stories of scandalous statements by CEOs, MPs, activists and so on, one thing always amazes me: why the hell isn't it enough for you to just be rich — why do you also have to be public/famous/"smart"/"patriots"?
I see nothing strange, he was just chasing hype, because that's what society demands: find enemies (speaks the wrong language, listens to the wrong music, reads the wrong books) and kick them together. That is, he did what everyone here wants and expects. He just wasn't lucky, the candidate turned out to be a false positive. If there had really been a vata, a lover of the Russian world, there'd be a different discussion here: "Way to go, Olezhka, get him!", "my favourite bank", "f*** off to Sberbank". And nobody would give a damn about personal data and the rest of the disgrace.
Judging by some comments, even if it had been the flag of "Parashka", people would still have trashed Monobank, not the girl... And that's very sad, there must be no tolerance for "Rasha".
Note: "Parashka" and "Rasha" are derogatory names for Russia.
Tymofiy Mylovanov: "I would have done the same as Horokhovskyi. […] The trigger here was the tricolour (or what looked like a tricolour). It's a situation where a leader has no right to "wait it out". Russian colours are a challenge. They are not ignored. He reacted. And made a mistake. And that's OK. Fine.
Note: The commenter is quoting a post by the economist and former economy minister Tymofiy Mylovanov.
It's strange that some people need it explained why this story is bad. And even here the point isn't what the banner really was. The point is this. The state has handed the monopoly on violence to activists. […] That's why in normal countries the judicial system should work, not condemnation by activists. If a person broke the law — go to the authorities.
It seems to me that stories like this damage reputation more through the very fact of being public. Even if it was an unfortunate joke or a moment taken out of context, to outsiders it looks very strange. At the same time monobank as a service is, to me, still one of the most convenient in Ukraine. But in such cases the management's communication and reaction matter no less than the product itself.
They help the army more (both in percentage and absolute terms) than most commenters who, "in white coats", shake about "rights" in the neighbouring threads and about how their "skin" could get damaged in a trench.

Dear author. I'm from the south of Ukraine. But it so happened that my native language is Russian. When I was at school everything was in Russian, and there were 2 Ukrainian lessons a week. And I think in Russian. Now, because of the occupation of my city, I live in Germany. […] And we're not all bad just because we speak Russian; we are those who lost everything we had. Everything of ours, property, homes and our lives. And if you say Russian is the occupier's language, why not say German is also an occupier's language? […] And I tried to switch to Ukrainian. But after 30 minutes of talking in Ukrainian I got very tired. Because I think in Russian.
Note: This top-level comment grew the longest reply chain in the thread.
You are Ukrainian and your native language is Ukrainian, just as a Pole's native language is Polish — otherwise he's not a Pole, just as a German's native language is German — otherwise he's not a German — that's how it works all over the world — it's called identity. […] Your native language is the language of your people, not the language of the invaders that people were forced to learn in order to turn everyone into "Russians".
And why exactly must I? Can't I live the way I like? It's not the people who are to blame, those who speak the way they were taught. It's those who didn't do it. And I'm not going to change for anyone.
Note: Comment in Russian, by the same person as the first one.
So don't learn it. It seems nobody forces anyone to learn the language — speak Swahili for all I care. But nobody has to adjust to you either. It's a normal, typical thing that the public sector will serve in the state language — Ukrainian — or in EU languages if we ever join. It's absolutely normal and typical for service to be in the state language, Ukrainian, by default. Which language you want to use in everyday communication is your choice, your right — but in Ukraine nobody has to adjust to your choice. As I see it, it's simple. And the same approach is in most European countries.
At the start of the war many switched to Ukrainian on patriotism, even I squeezed something out of myself, and then after a year or two people looked at how things are going around them, that one identity and the other are two sides of the same coin, and there was a rollback, everyone went back to their usual languages
Note: Comment in Russian.
I also switched and tried. I lasted a tiny bit. It's hard for me to speak Ukrainian. Because I don't think in it. […] Give me back my house and flat, and I swear I'll speak only Ukrainian. But honestly, Europe has given me more than Ukraine did in my whole life.
Note: Comment in Russian, by the same person as the first one.
With practice this tiredness goes away. Although I still think over some words, although lately it's how to translate a term from English correctly, whereas once it was Russian. I'm not even sure which language I think in now. My first language was Russian, as were my first school years in the south of Ukraine.

Ukrainians are so toxic. Not all of course. But many. They try to insult and wait for a reaction. Like some kind of national sport. Bot, not bot. This way and that. I wrote my opinion on the post. And I don't play your toxic Slavic games.

It's almost funny to read. Shot yourselves in the foot, got nothing but losses, and presented it as a mighty victory)
Well, once, for example, IBM could have refused to supply the Germans with equipment that was later used for concentration camps. But someone decided they would then "get nothing but losses", and the deliveries were made. They were reminded of it for many years. There is always some moral line. But talking about it as a pompous victory, while cutting off access for people who in no way support imperial approaches and the current course of Moscovia — that, to put it mildly, provokes mixed feelings. After such self-promotion (that, not the act itself) I wouldn't use their product, whatever the target language.

Most likely because DreamWorks was changing hands then and that dub was commissioned by 20th Century Fox, who held the animation rights. Now the owner is Universal. Either they didn't want to buy from Disney, or it wasn't preserved after the resale.

Kinomania has announced re-releases of the two parts of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in August and the first "Cars" in September (probably for the 20th anniversary of its release + official Ukrainian dubbing started with this very cartoon, and it's also 20 years old).

Note: Sarcastic.Quiet capitulation: how the internet makes us retreat from our native language
I removed Russian from every setting, and the internet still talks to me in Russian. […] But websites and search stubbornly talk to me in Russian. I have used every way of declaring which language I want content in, but the internet ignores my choice. Sometimes it's worse: Russian-language content is simply passed off as Ukrainian. […] I switch. Once more. And somewhere around the thousandth time it becomes easier to skim a Russian-language page than to look for that switch yet again. […] That is the quiet capitulation. Realising you are retreating from your own language — that weighed on me most. […] So Movar was born — an open-source browser extension. The project has one goal: to make the internet speak to you in your native language.
Thank you for your work and the main thing — don't give up! People will write "I wish I had your problems", "the army is short of people". But you keep doing your thing. As soon as everyone switches to Ukrainian the shelling stops at once, Ukrainians from all over the world return home, plants and factories rebuild themselves, the captured territories come back, and the demographic catastrophe turns into a demographic boom. Language is not only a weapon, language is magic — magic is magical thinking, magical thinking is the key to calm.
Note: Sarcastic.
Have you fallen off an oak tree. Wanting respect. In Ukraine there is one nation, the Ukrainian one. You are either Ukrainian or a foreigner. There is no such concept as a Russian-speaking Ukrainian. If you're looking for separatism, this is it. Dividing Ukrainians into Russian-speaking and Ukrainian-speaking, eastern and western, native and non-native. It's simple, you're either Ukrainian or not. You're either for Ukraine and promote Ukrainian interests, or not. You promote Russia's interests. A Ukrainian can have no respect for you.
Note: This account answers technical questions in the thread in the voice of Movar's developer.

On principle I don't click Russian links. At first it really annoyed me that Wikipedia always came up Russian first. And you know what — Google got it. Now the Ukrainian Wikipedia ranks above the katsap one. Even spam ads come in Ukrainian. If I search for something spelled the same in both languages, I add "-и" (exclude pages with the word "и"). So the idea is good, but I'm not sure the problem exists.. And let's be honest, most of my searching is in English
Note: "И" is a common Russian word not used in Ukrainian; "katsap" is a derogatory word for Russians.
I have a canonical query, "voltage relay". It was probably the last straw. There wasn't a single Ukrainian word in the results. AI, results, related questions — all in Russian. So yes, the problem exists. And just excluding "-и" isn't enough, though Movar uses that approach as a separate level of checking.
Note: This account answers technical questions in the thread in the voice of Movar's developer.
For those too lazy to read 200+ comments: The author described a specific technical problem: search pushes Russian-language results, and sites ignore language settings or redirect to the ru version. And he offered his own open-source solution. Some commenters, instead of discussing the product, moved on to belittling, diagnoses, the army and defending the status of Russian. Some didn't even finish the section explaining why it isn't an auto-translator. The author in turn resorted to sarcasm and insults. After that the discussion moved entirely from the product to who insulted whom. The extension doesn't ban anyone else's language choice. It implements the user's own choice — and that, "for some reason", was taken as an attack.
Damn, we're fighting a war to preserve the people and the state, but that doesn't stop us arguing about language for the 1001st time... This isn't the most important thing right now, be smarter.
Sorry, I had to clean up comments with personal insults. I hope the discussion only gains from this.
Note: Moderator comment (9 August 2026).
Another interesting fact — the simplest speech-recognition models can take Ukrainian for Russian. I tested whisper for local recognition: the same phrase with "polunytsia" and "palianytsia", the ggml-small-q5_1.bin model took as Russian with 76% probability, and the ggml-medium-q5_0.bin model as Ukrainian with 89% probability. No idea what to do about it.
Note: "Polunytsia" and "palianytsia" are shibboleths often used to tell native Ukrainian speakers apart.I thought the native language is the one you learned to talk on first, but it appears to be the one politically approved at the moment. Will memorize this, thanks.Don’t forget to adjust in case something changes, political life is unpredictable.

Note: Comment in English.
Oh friend, what a job! Honestly at first I thought I was paranoid: I set Ukrainian, and next time everything went back to Russian! Booking, AliExpress and other sites — language Russian, currency "fubles", flights from Moscow!!!
Note: "Fubles" is a mocking spelling of roubles.
Lately I've noticed foreign content shifting towards tolerating, one way or another, Russians, the Soviet thing or the Russian empire.
The problem of Russian-language content exists only for those who deliberately create it, or for neurotics. […] If a plum-pie recipe in Russian gives someone a feeling of inner capitulation, you are exactly a neurotic.
Note: Comment in Russian.
The author is getting flak not for the Ukrainian language but for a pointless fight against a non-existent problem. […] As someone wrote below, reading a borscht recipe in Russian or a charger description on AliExpress in Russian won't turn anyone into a lover of the "Russian world" or a Ukrainophobe. But having someone rub their nose in it, saying it's unpatriotic to read a borscht recipe in Russian (which some hurrah-patriots in the comments are doing) — yes, that can lose you a person loyal to Ukraine.

Strange, for me Ukrainian-language content occasionally gets passed off as Russian-language. But I have no butthurt about it.

It's like shouting during a plague epidemic: "Don't give the fleas away to the rats!" Far too many idiots blather like this about Bulgakov and his like; the only question is why spread their nonsense, including here?

Exactly. With that approach you could "read critically" even Vasily Shulgin. […] For the sake of awareness.

wolesj is doing a good thing, showing that among the experts there are also ignoramuses who, e.g., still lick M. Bulgakov.

What do you think of Ukrainians who keep listening to (pro-)Russian performers?
What do you think of Ukrainians who keep listening to (pro-)Russian performers? […] Photos 2 and 3 show the cities where Ani Lorak and Povaliy are listened to most. Kyiv is among them.
Note: Lorak and Povaliy are Ukrainian-born singers who moved to Russia.
Language squabbles aside, Russian stuff is just disgusting-disgusting for me to listen to. In their own closet let them listen even to the Russian anthem, but alone, not publicly crapping into everyone's ears.
The paradox is that Ani Lorak and Taisiya Povaliy have lots of songs in Ukrainian. So by listening to songs in Ukrainian, the money goes to these performers who live in Russia and pay taxes that are used to shell us. Poo-poo-poo.
I'm Croatian and I stopped listening to Russian music when the war started. I don't want them making money off me 🙄
I think it's the result of many years of Russian "propaganda" in Ukraine. It's very hard to give up what you grew up with, and the truth is that a lot of Ukrainians grew up with Russian music and films. My dad told me there was something similar in Croatia when the war with Serbia started. Many people still listened to their music and watched their films at first, then stopped completely. When the war ended, many started again. But personally I don't want to financially support people living in a country that is destroying your country and killing your people. Honestly I don't give a damn about their music, there are enough artists in the world who don't live there
I don't think about them. Mainly because it's a factor I can't influence. Some soldiers watch "Slovo patsana" and other Russian series. Who am I to reproach them?
Note: "Slovo patsana" is a hit 2023 Russian series.
If a person is defending the country, any nitpicking about their "civic position" is completely un- reasonable and stupid in essence. And generally, people quite often forget Article 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine, which makes any nitpicking on language grounds a purely personal and not always lawful initiative. […] Telling off local hooligans singing along to modern Russian songs on a speaker — OK, a good deed; but in a healthy society a citizen should not care at all what plays in another person's headphones or how they speak outside work.
Note: Article 10 of the constitution makes Ukrainian the state language while guaranteeing the free development of Russian and other minority languages.
I don't care what music a person listens to, I listen to such music myself, so I see no point condemning anyone for it. The main thing is not to play it on a speaker so everyone around hears it. There's a line here: listen to what you want, but don't force others to listen with you.
I haven't listened to anything Russian since the start of the full-scale invasion. Since then I've been discovering the vast Ukrainian music space, and in fact if a person has cotton wadding in their head you can't get rid of it, and as long as they enjoy listening to it somewhere in a little white room, let them stay there. If I hear such rubbish in the street, I can calmly turn to law enforcement under Article 15, Part 2 of the Law on Culture, which bans playing anything Russian in public. So I couldn't care less that vata listens to vata.
Note: This is the commenter's reading of the law; we have not checked the provision.
And would you like to file a complaint under Article 10 of the Constitution?
You don't know how legislation works, i.e. you don't know your rights, but you want them. Are you just as ready to go after Ukrainian-language music? When you hear it in a café, for example? Maybe French-language tunes annoy you? Or are you a follower of double standards after all?
I really don't care whether a song is in Russian or not. What matters to me is the song itself, and leave the language squabbles to politics. I have listened to and will keep listening to Russian-language songs, not because I'm a "traitor" but because I like these songs.
Honestly it's disrespect to all the Heroes defending our country. I can't say people must be forced to switch to something unfamiliar, but at least don't act tough and try to do something
Before the war I listened to all sorts, like "Melnitsa" or other Russian folk. Now I've mostly dropped it, but not because of "ugh, ugh, Russian". […] Until someone shows me, my attitude is neutral and I mostly don't care.
Note: The cut part says he would delete the band's songs if shown they support Putin.Zelensky outraged that his series Svaty may be banned after its lead, a Russian actor, spoke about Crimea
Zelensky is outraged that his series Svaty will be banned after its lead actor, a Russian, spoke about Crimea. […] Just leaving this here, for the historical record.
Note: The starter posted an old video; commenters say the clip is from 2017.
What exactly is the point of "back then there were Russian series, Russian music, all sorts of Sosedovs, and now we've freed the info space from them"? I didn't watch or listen to them long before all this "liberation from the collective Olya Polyakova". Whoever wanted to listened and watched then, and listens and watches now. I remember that under Yanukovych people went to the cinema — whoever wanted to saw Madagascar, whoever wanted to saw Three Bogatyrs. What's the problem anyway? Was all this worth it?) There was a choice, it's not as if everything was crammed only with Russian stuff. Want Russian, watch it; want French or American, fine. Same with books in shops — there were Ukrainian ones, there were Russian ones, choose whichever you like, as you personally wish.
Note: Sosedov is a Russian music critic who once judged Ukrainian talent shows; Three Bogatyrs is a Russian animated series.
Oh, a disciple of the "Whaaat's the diiifference" concept. Before 2014 Ukrainian culture, Ukrainian publishing, Ukrainian cinema and dubbing were in decline! There were almost no Ukrainian books, Russian was heard everywhere — on radio, on TV, and most importantly in the minds of the overwhelming majority of our fellow citizens.
Note: "Какая разница" ("what's the difference") is a Russian phrase used to mock people indifferent to the language question.
It's not "what's the difference" at all, it's about personal choice. It reminds me of those vegetarians who smash windows in butcher shops. Still, I admit it's a primitive, down-to-earth point of view.
Sure, only Ukrainian-language books weren't that easy to find. I was looking for a hard-page alphabet book for my child, dreamed of a big bright one, and across the whole Petrivka market in Kyiv I found only one that met the basic criterion (hard pages), the size of an adult's palm. Meanwhile there were plenty of Russian alphabet books in the format I needed. So much for your great choice, choose what you like.
Note: Petrivka is a well-known book market in Kyiv.
Wow. How old are you? I never had trouble with school books, and almost everything in the library was in Ukrainian. Harder to find was the fantasy I read as a child. There was much more Russian on the fiction market, which isn't surprising if you compare the scale of our printing houses then with theirs.
Але заборону росiйськомовних пiсень (навiть якщо це українськi виконавцi) вiн пiдписав.
But he did sign the ban on Russian-language songs (even by Ukrainian performers).
Nobody will grab you by the backside like in Russia for listening to "extremist songs". Only public playing is banned, although I don't know what kind of person you'd have to be to listen to that crap in public
"Publicly" — they can pin that on you even if you're listening in your car and someone hears it. And the fact that people don't give a damn about these bans and keep listening to what they like — that's a fact
Sorry, but what difference does it make what an actor said in real life? There are legendary films with actors of controversial reputation, so what? Shut down The Avengers to fight drugs because Robert Downey Jr. used to be an addict? Feels like watching the Russian opposition with a hint of "vata". And of course nobody wanted to put themselves in his shoes at that moment
Note: "Vata" (cotton wadding) is a derogatory word for pro-Kremlin people.
Because Zelensky paid this actor's salary and planned to keep paying it, filming more seasons. Also the filming was done in Russia with Zelensky's and Kvartal's money, and he paid taxes in Russia too.
Note: Posted by the thread starter. This is the commenter's claim; the next comment disputes it.Metro 2039 will have no Russian
It's an obvious decision really, when one of the developers died at the front and when the game is made by a Ukrainian studio — a Russian release, even set in a Russian city, would be inappropriate given the current war.
Note: "One of the developers died at the front" is the starter's claim; we have not verified it.
Here comes a very unpopular opinion) This game should have a Russian localisation. It's like cutting German from the Nazis in Wolfenstein — that's nonsense, no? You're literally making a game about Russian Nazis in the Moscow metro and they speak Ukrainian?
Note: "Руснява" is a derogatory adjective for Russian.
I agree it would be fitting, but not while the people whose language they want to add to the game are killing Ukrainians.
Note: Posted by the thread starter.
They add Ukrainian to their big releases like Atomic Heart or Space Marine 2 and expect the same hypocrisy towards the Western audience from us. Unlike us, they can afford a certain apoliticism; we, with the events and mood in the country, can't — not without huge rows. Either way they'll cobble together their fan translations.
By apoliticism I mean indifference and purely commercial reasoning, even if in practice that's not the case. Commercially it would be logical to add Russian, but in our situation it risks angering the domestic audience.
IMHO the optimum would be if the protagonist and the characters and factions friendly to him spoke Ukrainian, and the enemies Russian. The fire in the swamps would only get stronger.
Note: "Fire in the swamps" means Russian outrage; "the swamps" is a derogatory name for Russia.
The studio is simply in a no-win situation. They'll be pecked to death from both sides whatever the voice-over. […] Hardly many Ukrainian voice actors would agree to dub in Russian — they still have to work afterwards, and our people would clearly see them as idiots after that.
A game about Moscow, about Russian culture, from a Russian writer — dunno, kind of cringe
Note: The Metro series is based on novels by the Russian writer Dmitry Glukhovsky.
They should have made Russian and then demonstratively donated all the money from sales to the Russian-speakers to the armed forces. The front would get help, and a bunch of Russians would be set up under the hammer)) As it is there's moral satisfaction of course, but material help to the guys in the trenches would be better.
Dunno, a game about Moscow without Russian is kind of rubbish. Same as a game about Kyiv without Ukrainian. Better then to make a game about Ukraine, or set Metro in the US somewhere. I'm totally for an authentic product, and after playing the previous Metros I certainly didn't become a fan of the Russian world one bit
Who knows, I think there should be a voice-over, as an element of soft power and of commercialising the project (that's what a business is for)
No, no need, soft power doesn't work on VPN-Russians — on the contrary, they like being treated "harsher" XD
You do understand the point is that the studio didn't spend money and time on their voice-over and text, and showed its attitude to them that way? What anyone else does is their business.
The Russians are whining again
Metro 2039 can now be pre-ordered on Steam, and the Russians have started whining again about the lack of localisation into their language. […] It just makes me laugh — what do you think?
Note: "Русня" is a derogatory word for Russians.
I thought so too, but then I remembered how many films there are about countries or events in them where the local language isn't used... so whatever. Yes, it would be authentic of course, but it is what it is
Different people shout, some don't care about localisation, some do. For example Ukrainians play Genshin without a Ukrainian localisation, yet in the Play Market reviews they give 1 star and write that the game is crap, there's no Ukrainian 😺
Not only the Russians, unfortunately. On the Metro subreddit a bunch of Westerners are whining about it.
I had a look around and tbh most of those "Westerners" really are typical Russian bots with boosted karma. Most real Westerners are discussing whether Ukrainian sounds similar enough to Russian, and whether the game with Ukrainian dubbing + English subs will give the same vibe as Russian dubbing + English subs.
They're as ridiculous as those who whine about the lack of a Ukrainian localisation. Don't like it — don't buy it. Or learn English
Взагалi це дивно i ламає трошки сетiнг на мiй погляд.
On the whole it's strange and breaks the setting a bit in my view. But I'm not a fan of the series anyway, so I don't care that there's no Russian.
Better to earn a few hryvnias off them than not to earn, fairly obviously.
Better to earn it from Westerners. By adding a localisation for them you only show you agree to cooperate with them. Besides, for voice-over the developer has to pay actors, i.e. Russians. Get it — Ukrainian developers paying Russians. They'll play anyway. They'll pirate it off torrents all the same.
Note: The original "лохолізація" is a pun merging "localisation" with an insult for "sucker".
Explain, non-ironically, what's the point of not selling them games? If Russians can pay for any game, why not milk them to the max and take the money, instead of catching lulz from the comments? Same for expensive brands. If they're not banned from buying foreign currency, better they buy imported goods and services than spend the money at home, right?
Ukrainian dubbing is slowly blossoming now, so there's a good chance new games will be much better. That the game is about Russians is a pity, but they've been nicking Ukrainian (and not only) motifs and stories all along and churning out something as their own without Ukrainians' participation, not to mention Ukrainian dubbing.
