"Ukraine's future without corruption": Mariia Barabash's peaceful protest

    OP

Hi, I live in Antalya and, although 90% of the time I do the same as I did in Ukraine — work from home, talk with Ukrainians, read Ukrainian news — the other 10% objectively cut me off from the reality happening in Ukraine. And there are thoughts I kept quiet about publicly, namely: I don't believe in any victory of Ukraine over Moscovia under Zelensky's presidency, and I'm starting to see these thoughts more and more often in Ukrainian news. […] This week NABU began publishing evidence about the corruption of Timur Mindich, one of Zelensky's closest friends and co-owner of the Kvartal 95 studio.

Just a few small problems left: — Find a replacement. Aren't you planning to come back from Antalya with a professional team that has a concrete plan to end the war? — Hold elections under shelling. Won't you tell us how to do that? And with what money?

    2. u113●●●

Replacing Ze during the war is impossible, unfortunately. But we can at least press his servants to finally peel themselves off his dollar teat and start working for the country, forming a normal, professional government rather than a political and gangster one.

Note: "Servants" alludes to the ruling Servant of the People party.

Yaroslav, it seems you are supporting the narrative of pro-Russian parties with topics like this, where the aim is to destabilise the internal situation: corruption; not believing in victory (there are people here whose loved ones are in the occupied territories), etc. I hope I'm wrong.

    7. u1xa●●●

In Ukraine it is simply not safe now to express thoughts like those in the original post, because they may come to visit. I believe public resonance is needed, because only it can now somehow shake this whole system and give hope for change.

Which points of the Russian-American "peace plan" are most unacceptable for Ukraine, and what to do about it?

    ▲Post▼

Why a diplomatic settlement? Because Ukraine, to great regret, is not capable of inflicting a military defeat on Russia. […] Conclusion: none of the 28 points of the "plan" should be a deal breaker for Ukraine... […] BUT (and it's simply a giant BUT) the question arises: what guarantees are there that Russia, having thus bypassed the biggest fortifications in Donetsk Oblast, won't simply attack again in a week/month/year

Note: The poster went through the plan point by point and argued that the army cap and the NATO clause were not fatal.

Again, to dictate your terms you need leverage in negotiations: an offensive at the front, economic importance for the world economy, a strong diplomatic corps and dozens of other important factors. Why would Ukraine be on board with this "Peace plan"? It asks them to surrender all of their occupied land, cripple their military, and essentially just become a Russian vassal state. That's not a Peace Plan that's a Surrender.

If you read the actual plan it's actually .. not horrible. 600k troops is a lot for peace time (assuming there is actually peace). Ukraine will certainly downsize if there is long term peace. The territory loss is hard to accept, but Ukraine is not in a good place right now and losing the war entirely is not off the table today. 4 years is a long time to be at war and the people of Ukraine have suffered greatly. It's easy to sit back in the US and say it's unacceptable, it's different when you're on the front lines losing friend after friend to drones. It's also different when you're a civilian under constant bombardment for 4 years. I'd want to see the security guarantees be more explicit and the penalties for Russian violation be more extreme. I wouldn't be surprised if a modification of this plan gets signed. If it doesn't, my bet would be that the No comes from Putin, not Zelenskyy. For Putin this peace deal is a clear failure of stated objectives (conquering Ukraine and "de-nazifiying" the country). Putin does not like to back down from goals. I fully expect to be downvoted into oblivion, but thought I'd add some less biased commentary for those who are interested.

A senior US official told reporters that the original wording of the plan called for an audit of all international aid received by Ukraine, presumably to identify potential corruption. […] However, this requirement is no longer included in the new version of the plan. Instead of verification, it is proposed that all parties receive full amnesty for their actions during the war.

There was a rumour that Trump is presenting Europe with a fait accompli: either they give him Greenland, or America stops its aid activity in Ukraine. […] On one hand, if they choose Greenland they protect their NATO interests and their code, but Ukraine won't hold out long + they need cheap oil from Venezuela […] If they choose Ukraine, the alliance will crack badly over its values, articles and worldview.

DOU Day

Not "do I want to" but "what do I owe": two thoughts after Portnikov's DOU Day interview

    OP

I watched Portnikov's interview at DOU Day 2026 and two phrases stuck firmly in my head: 1) "the military is not a change of profession, it is a duty" […] So the wrong question is "Do I want to fight?", because it really leads nowhere; the question that leads somewhere is "Do I want to exist inside this structure?" — and if the answer is "yes", you owe it for that. This is structure, not a metaphor at all. […] 2) "we need to preserve the state, and that task is not yet done"

      >>> the question that leads somewhere is "Do I want to exist inside this structure?" — and if the answer is "yes", you owe it for that Owe it by the fact of being born? And if the answer is "no", will they open the borders so everyone who wants can leave? A very interesting position, very Soviet in style...

Note: "Sovok" is a derogatory word for Soviet-style thinking.
    2. u15x●●●

Fighting for the state... is about like burning out to death in a salaried job. For the nation, for family, for revenge — imho a better motivator.

    3. u2c5●●●

I was born in the USSR. At school I was taught that every man's highest duty is to give his life for the Motherland. […] But then the USSR suddenly vanished, along with people's savings.

Note: This comment started the longest reply chain in the thread.
    4. u1kr●●●

When will Portnikov fulfil his duty?

    5. u1cy●●●

An interesting sleight of hand: the interests of mafia clans are presented as the state. And the fact that they haven't robbed you completely is presented as an achievement you must give your life for.

    6. u1m9●●●

This topic has been discussed a million times. It always comes down to one thing. Whoever has a more advantageous position in the state looks for arguments why others must be sacrificed to preserve it. And the other way round. Whoever is at the bottom, in the role of a resource, doesn't want to hear these arguments. These two groups will never agree, because it is a zero-sum game. Either some lose their position in the state, or the others lose their health or their life.

    7. ueoh●●●

Don't want to — don't go. Keep sitting at home, you've already sat there 4 years, Bolt will bring you food. […] But don't cover fear with "logic" and chatter about owing nothing. When someone had to hold the line, there were always those who stood up.

Note: The poster describes himself in the thread as an officer of the Khartiia Corps. Bolt is a food-delivery app.

Relax, all of you, it's simpler than that: you were just not very lucky to be born in this place at this time.

    9. u1qc●●●

Is it really so hard to admit your own infantilism and sit quietly, instead of inventing dozens of senseless excuses? It's truly pathetic and worthless.

    10. u14t●●●

I see a new trend. Instead of paying employees you should tell them they work for a higher goal and a bright future. This has happened before :(

    11. u1hp●●●

"Do I want to exist inside this structure?" No, I don't.

    12. u1ht●●●

It seems to me that many here would now say they don't want to live in this structure, because the EU offers almost everyone better alternatives.

    13. u113●●●

Congratulations! It's clear you listened carefully to Portnikov and drew the right conclusions. Pity you're in the minority.

Portnikov first worked for the CPSU because he graduated from Moscow State University, journalism faculty no less (they didn't take just anyone), defended the CPSU (alongside Khuilo, by the way), then worked for and defended oligarchs, and now who is he defending? Propagandist — Portnikov.

Note: "Khuilo" is an insulting nickname for Putin.
    15. ugql●●●

You "owe" when something was lent to you, something material. And when there's no debt, there's no duty :) In all other cases it's a mighty con for suckers.

Do you understand that in 1–5 years you will have to win the state back from the 5–8 thousand families who have owned Ukraine (Ukrainian SSR 2.0) for the last 35–50 years?

    17. u16y●●●

The state is us. It is built on consensus among its citizens, and so exists only to protect the interests of its citizens. If the consensus disappears, the state disappears too. […] Why might that consensus disappear? For example, because the state stops protecting the interests of its citizens and protects only part of the ruling class, as has happened in history. So think about it, gentlemen.

    18. u1ph●●●

The state is a concrete bureaucratic apparatus. Everyone in that apparatus bears responsibility, including criminal responsibility, for criminal negligence and abuse of power. Stop this nonsense. The state is NOT us!

The sub is ironic of course, but what you don't hear in those comments. That the UPA is the Waffen SS, that the Poles are saints and everyone wronged them, and that the Germans invaded the Soviet Union together with the UPA.

Nothing to be surprised at! Let whoever condemn us, the European Parliament, the Lyakhs, the Moskals, eventually they'll get used to our worldview! They fear not the UPA but our agency.

At his first meeting with Zelia, Nawrocki gave him the book "Volhynia". He didn't start now, he started before the election and rode anti-Ukrainian sentiment among other things.

Yes, because the Volhynia tragedy is just one episode of a partisan war where Poles slaughtered Ukrainians and Ukrainians slaughtered Poles, and there were countless such episodes before and after this tragedy.

Note: This is the commenter's view; most historians regard the Volhynia massacres as ethnic cleansing of Polish civilians.

"With Bandera, Ukraine will not join the EU"

    OP

This view was expressed by Poland's deputy prime minister and defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Polsat News. […] "In the EU you can't put on a pedestal those who destroy European cooperation. With Bandera, Ukraine will not join the European Union" © […] As I understand it, this is a reaction to Zelensky's announcement of a National Pantheon. So, comrades, what do you choose — Bandera or the EU?

Note: Notes from Poland later found that the line "With Bandera, Ukraine will not join the EU" was spoken by the interviewer, not the minister; the misattribution was already widespread when the thread opened.

As long as Russia hasn't come for them, they don't need Ukraine. When it does, they'll forget Bandera and want security guarantees, or at least to buy drones and get instructors.

    2. ud71●●●

Bandera has nothing to do with it the Poles are just stirring things up they really don't want to lose the chance to dump Ukrainian grain at the border and watch the EU give subsidies to other farmers (and they probably have 100 such reasons)

    3. ucdd●●●

We need to forget about Mr Bandera until the end of the war; that's easy, because 99.999% of people don't know who he is. The problem is that the stupid authorities won't let us.

    4. u1y6●●●

It isn't Bandera holding us back now, oh, it isn't Bandera.

    5. u112●●●

Setting aside the question of when Ukraine joins the EU and whether we'll live to see it, I'm curious what we'll do if the Poles dig in and veto accession. Macedonia had to change its name to North Macedonia and amend its constitution after Bulgaria's veto. So what will we choose — Bandera or the EU?

    6. uxxg●●●

Obviously Bandera is already cemented into the national consciousness and that can't be changed. […] I see only one strategy — wait until their government changes. Something like in Hungary.

The cybersecurity role is overrated — and the data prove it. Portnikov already explained to you at DOU Day: the issue is not Fedorov at all, but the absence of a government of national salvation and the Verkhovna Rada's lack of agency. But that's exactly what Ukrainians voted for in 2019.

It's naive to think that last time Ze was stopped only by people with cardboard. There was a push from European partners, who have real influence because they give the money. This time they don't care about some Fedorov — Ze decided to change the defence minister, it's not the first time.

The whole of Threads is full of wailing: "I'm starting to lose trust in Zelensky", "We have a new presidential candidate" etc. One could say people have got dumber, but no, what's the point.

    6. u19b●●●

I was never a fan of Fedorov after the "cybersecurity role" and Diia City; but blaming him for not fixing all his predecessors' systemic mistakes in 7 months in office is terminal-stage idiocy.

    7. u1jo●●●

After these reshuffles the MoD and the Interior Ministry will be headed by two cop buddies. Can you imagine how much the "cooperation" between the police and the ТЦК will "improve", especially when it comes to catching and delivering people?

Note: ТЦК: territorial recruitment centre, the conscription office.
    8. u2c5●●●

Isn't it clear that the problem isn't Fedorov? Many of those who came out and wrote said they didn't support Fedorov. But the main problem is something else: Zelensky's choice between Fedorov and Syrskyi is a choice between reforms and "leave everything as it is". And this "as it is" no longer suits people!

Is it time for elections? Discuss and vote

    OP

Back in 2023 we already raised the question of whether holding elections is relevant in today's realities. And now the topic is gaining momentum again. Oleksandr Kosovan, founder and CEO of MacPaw, also raised on his Facebook page the question of whether elections should be held now. […] Community, what do you think now? Compared with 2023, has your position on holding elections changed?

Note: Opened by the DOU editors with a site poll: of 437 votes, 61% chose "yes, elections are needed now", 17% "needed, but only after hostilities end", 14% "elections cannot be held during war".

Elections can be held, but on several conditions: 1. A return to standards of free speech and journalism. Closing the single lie-o-phone, returning the channels Espreso, 5 Kanal and Priamyi, illegally removed from national broadcasting.

Note: The "single lie-o-phone" refers to the joint wartime TV news marathon.
    2. u113●●●

Britain held elections perfectly well during WWII, and yes, Brits at the front voted. And votes were collected from everyone who wanted. Yes, it took a long time. But democracy and the replaceability of power are that very great value that must never be lost, even during war.

    3. u1pm●●●

Maybe they're needed, but how? Elections aren't just putting a mark on a ballot. They're also candidates meeting voters and debating each other. Can that be made safe? I think the answer is obvious.

    4. u1gu●●●

Elections during war are pure populism and Fedorov hit his audience 100%. Look how it's burning.

    5. u1c8●●●

"58% Yes, elections are needed now" I'm still green in life, but how do you imagine this? I'm not even talking about which candidates you're considering. Are we going to vote on vibes again? Wasn't Servant of the People enough?

Note: Servant of the People is Zelensky's party. The poll stood at 58% when this was written.
    6. uxxg●●●

The biggest problem is that elections are a political struggle. Different political groups compete and in effect work to split society. That's normal when there's no war. But in wartime it's a disaster.

    7. u12q●●●

It's impossible to hold elections during war because a million soldiers won't be able to vote. And many other reasons too. That's the whole discussion.

    8. u112●●●

That's not a discussion, it's an excuse. How many "millions" of soldiers exactly won't be able to vote, what needs to be done to give them that possibility, which procedures to change. […] And keeping the mafia in power because "we can't hold elections" — that's an excuse.

    9. ubzk●●●

Why won't they be able to vote? When it comes to sitting on smartphones everyone has access to everything, but when it's elections suddenly they can't? The guys chat from the trenches and send their salary to their wives via Privat from dugouts. Voting in Diia is more than realistic.

Note: Diia is Ukraine's state-services app; Privat refers to PrivatBank's mobile banking.
    10. u124●●●

Is whoever made this poll a complete stranger to logic? The first three options don't contradict each other.

    11. ucq0●●●

Given recent events (corruption scandals) I'm changing my position on elections and think elections must be held. And the Rada and the President together. The current authorities must either confirm their mandate or go.

    12. u10j●●●

Our community head managed to assemble the necessary electoral commission; on the way they turned off into a tree belt and counted everything the way it should be. […] I don't believe this can be done in the current conditions. So for me all the theoretical debates have no practical sense. Now ruzzia won't let elections happen, in a year or two the green and wise ones won't let them happen.

Note: "The green ones" alludes to Zelensky's camp.

Zelensky puts people loyal to him in such posts, so that there are fewer who could set him up. The goal of these protests should not be "Fedorov, the end" but "Zelensky, the end".

The commander-in-chief's dismissal is a direct result of the protests; this is confirmed if only by the fact that the reason for the dismissal was directly named as the conflict with Syrskyi and the latter's mockery of Fedorov. By devaluing this you only show a complete lack of understanding of democratic processes. The fact that society, probably for the first time in Ukraine's history, voluntarily, out of civic conviction and outrage at openly bad government decisions, came out in support of a specific politician speaks for itself.

Dunno, for me Fedorov is an ambiguous figure and I really don't like his idealisation. I don't agree with all his reforms. I was all for Syrnyk's dismissal, but I have no desire to blindly go protest for Fedorov.

Mykhailo Fedorov calls for elections in Ukraine in his address

    OP

Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov has recorded a video address "about corruption, the governance crisis and the Ukraine we must build". […] At the same time, war should not cancel the principles of democracy. Elections are the mechanism by which society assesses the authorities and decides whether it is ready to keep entrusting them with governing. Ukraine must not let Russia decide when Ukrainians can choose their government. A legal, safe and realistic mechanism must be found to restore the full democratic process even during a long war. […] What do you think? Are elections possible in Ukraine?

Note: Opened as a news post by DOU's defence-tech community.

Once he was fired, he remembered elections.

    2. ufa8●●●

Elections are not possible under the law. Full stop. Better he names names and exposes the corruption schemes. Then we can talk. Plus it was Fedorov himself who promoted this system. He kept silent about corruption all these years. And once he got kicked out he started telling half the truth?

    3. uv44●●●

As far as I know, Mr Fedorov has never once been at the front or anywhere near it. Talk of elections and so on carries little weight from a person who lacks even half the range of knowledge needed in our situation. So with all respect, his address is not relevant.

    4. ux4c●●●

Elections in Ukraine are pointless and counterproductive even in peacetime. On the whole democracy, to put it mildly, has given Ukraine nothing in terms of economic, scientific-technical and military development.

    5. uhdz●●●

And who are the candidates? Is there even one for peace? Because if the choice is only whether to send people to their death "technocratically" or "the old way", that's no choice.

A question for the fans of elections. What use are elections? Which of your problems did elections solve in the past?

    11. u1e6●●●

Why impossible, it's possible. Field polling stations for the army, ordinary ones for the rest of Ukraine, those abroad simply don't vote, and that's it.

    12. uhif●●●

It's good that the words about elections came from such a currently hyped figurehead as Fedorov. Obviously, elections are needed only to elect a Ukrainian Pétain who will sign the peace (capitulation). We'd better accept peace before Putin smashes the remains of civilisation in Ukraine.

Note: Pétain led France's Vichy regime after signing the 1940 armistice with Nazi Germany.

Holding elections would be an absolute miracle. But even the mere fact that someone dared to talk about it gives rise to hope, for the first time in a long while.

    14. uapt●●●

Elections can be held but — purely electronic via smartphone — authorised votes (bank ID), not anonymous, because... read on — an open read-only database to prevent "ballot-rigging" (anyone can count the votes at any time, see who voted for what etc.) everything else is shit from Stalin's time with paper and fraud at every level

    15. u1k8●●●

In 2019 there were 4.3 million Ukrainians abroad, officially registered as voters 400–500 thousand. Of them, ~60 thousand voted. For some reason in 2019 nobody gave a damn, but now it's very important to Zelensky that someone might not be able to vote, and great emphasis is put on it. Anything to avoid holding elections.

    16. u1ht●●●

Again, elections are needed to determine this, because for now the authorities act as if the majority wants to fight, relying on polls where 60% support Zelensky and don't want to give up the rest of Donbas for peace.

    17. u2c5●●●

Because they ask the wrong question: they should ask whether you personally are ready to go and defend the rest of Donbas. And then it will immediately turn out that those willing to fight for Donbas are far fewer than 60%.

A year on, are there still Trump fans alive in Ukraine?

A year ago I posted this meme and despite a decent number of upvotes there were still individuals who defended Trump for various reasons. So today, against the backdrop of the latest news, I'm going to tag a few people here.

What's scary is not that he's so stupid, what's scary is that the majority consciously elected him.

Before the 2024 election there were reasons to think he might be our elephant, since his previous term was beneficial for Ukraine: the US for the first time handed over some lethal weapons, joint military exercises were held, there was pressure on Rashka in Syria. Although all this was more thanks to his team than to him personally.

Note: The elephant is the symbol of the US Republican Party; "Rashka" is a derogatory name for Russia.

Maybe the only politician who started talking about peace rather than eternal war, about at least some diplomacy rather than an eye for an eye

Note: The subject here is the Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko.

A guy who defended the Russian language, was in OPZZh and speaks against volunteers can't be for peace. He can be for defending Russian values. Don't swap the question

Note: OPZZh (Opposition Platform — For Life) is a banned pro-Russian party.

Even the bald devil, if he talks about peace! Whether he's really for peace or it's just a fairy tale for those who want to hear it — doesn't matter! The main thing is that there must be a public dialogue about peace and the demand for it, and while there's no such conversation the authorities think everything's OK (for them it certainly is)

Well, Bidon actually banned us from striking ruzzia's territory, just so we'd play on defence

Note: "Bidon" (a can) is a mocking name for Biden.

      1. The ban was on American weapons, which Trumpon didn't give at all. So he has no say now. 2. The refinery strikes are by Ukrainian drones.
